What I am about to tell you may come as a shock… Popcorn isn’t just sweet or salted anymore. Popcorn comes in a whole array of delicious flavours and I have tried and tested 5 popcorn flavours that sound really weird but are surprisingly delicious.
WARNING: This post will open up your snacking repertoire and take you to another level in your snack game.
This may be life changing… Ok, so I’m probably exaggerating slightly but this is really something I want to tell you about.
Flavoured popcorn is nothing new…
I’ve walked past flavoured popcorn in the aisles of shops before and ignored it. I’ve gone straight to my tried and tested snackfoods and not given it a second thought. It wasn’t until I won a whole boxful of Cobs Popcorn and Chips in a giveaway that I actually tried it for the first time…
And just like a popcorn kernel popping from being exposed to just the right amount of heat; my mind was blown. Poof!
So, please open up your heart and your mouth to the wonders of flavoured popcorn. Here are my top picks of the Cobs popcorn flavours I have tried, with a handy weirdness vs. deliciousness chart. Of course the chart is purely my opinion, everyone’s tastebuds are different.
1) Chicago Mix: Cheddar Cheese and Sweet Caramel
Cheese and caramel… This can’t be a thing, can it? This is exactly what I thought before I opened the bag. The thought of these two flavours mixed together in the bag made my stomach churn a little. But in the interest of research I cracked open the bag and dug in.
I ate a piece of cheese popcorn. Yum. I ate a piece of caramel popcorn. Yum. I ate a piece of caramel and cheese popcorn together…. And from that moment I was hooked.
I actually purchased more of this flavour because I love it soooooo much. It truly is my guilty pleasure. Stu won’t touch the stuff. He says it’s too weird but frankly that’s my gain because it means it’s all mine, baby!
2) Nacho Cheese
Ok so we’ve established cheese popcorn is a thing now. How different can nacho cheese really be? I rolled my eyes as I opened the packet and once again my expectations were blasted out of the water.
This ain’t just your average cheesy popcorn. The ‘nacho’ part should have tipped me off that this was something a little bit special but alas my popcorn prejudice got the better of me.
It really does taste like nachos. The familiar salsa taste will have your tastebuds singing!
3) Smokey BBQ
The word ‘smokey’ implies a level of complex flavour that I just didn’t think popcorn could achieve. Once again, I was proven wrong because damnnn this is smokey. It has a delicious BBQ flavour that is quite addictive.
We opened up a packet of this when we had some friends over and it went down really well. A good beginners flavoured popcorn.
Stu actually likes this one and this was a flavour that we ordered more of. Just talking about it now is making my mouth water.
4) California Ranch
This one does sound a bit bizarre. Ranch is a dip right? This definitely isn’t one for everyone but I found it was a really nice lunchtime snack alongside a sandwich.
The flavour kinda reminds me of light and tangy flavour chips so if you like those this is your jam.
It wasn’t my favourite but I think it deserves an honourable mention as I do think the flavour is nice.
5) Vermont Maple Vanilla
The name of this is so specific.
I kinda thought maple was reserved for pancakes and bacon but it works so well on popcorn that I’m now a believer.
The hint of vanilla gives this one such a smooth flavour. Before you know it you’ve almost eaten the whole packet. I’m talking about a friend obviously… *cough*
It’s got a delicate sweetness that satisfies your sweet tooth without overdoing it.
On the back of the Cobs popcorn packets they have a little statement that says “Just try it once and you’ll be hooked.” I can totally testify to this. I probably would have never bought any of these but it’s a lesson learned to try new things, even if it is just popcorn.
Disclosure: I won a Cobs sampler pack in a competition and then I returned to them and bought a 6 pack box of my favourite flavours. This is definitely not sponsored. In fact, I feel Cobs may be deeply disturbed by my level of enthusiasm for their popcorn…
